Safe Ways to Change Lanes

Lane changing can sometimes be tricky when it comes to a tractor-trailer. Spotting vehicles intending to switch lanes into your desired lane from the adjacent one can sometimes be challenging, but adopting a slow and deliberate approach is crucial. Despite having six rear-facing mirrors in all our trucks, they are only beneficial if used correctly. Although this advice may seem basic, consider it a quick reminder to achieve success. Here are the essential steps for executing a proper lane change:

  • Maintain awareness of your surroundings, encompassing a 360-degree view.
  • Assess whether there is enough space in the lane you intend to enter, accounting for any adjustments to the following distances. Also, ensure that the traffic in that lane is moving at a safe speed.
  • After checking all three mirrors, indicate your intention to change lanes by activating your turn signal.
  • Pause for a few seconds to observe how other vehicles react to your signal.
  • Recheck all three mirrors to confirm it is clear, then gradually begin the lane change.
  • Keep monitoring both lanes you occupy while periodically glancing at your rear-view mirrors and staying attentive to what is happening ahead.
  • Once safely in the new lane, refocus on maintaining an appropriate following distance and promptly cancel the turn signal.
  • Although many of our trucks feature technology to detect blind-spot traffic, it should not lead to neglecting the fundamental steps.

Congratulations on executing a safe lane change! Remember to exercise patience and carefully select a lane. Each lane changes you attempt exposes you to potential incidents and may not necessarily improve your overall position, especially in heavy traffic.

Indeed, changing lanes can be quite an involved process, but it is crucial to follow these steps consistently. Also, remember that fast-moving motorcycles approaching from behind and beside you add an extra layer of challenge to lane changes.
