Why is there a Red Line on my Trailer?

Year after year, one of the most frequent and preventable accidents happens when drivers try to turn too tight or back and jack a trailer too hard and damage the wing extenders and brackets on the tractor. Each time this occurs, it takes about $2,000 to repair the damage. To help eliminate the damaged wings, we have added red lines on both sides of our trailers, as pictured below.

Why is there a Red Line on my Trailer?

Now, as you back into the dock and look into your mirror, you will see the red line as your guide. Once the red line disappears from the mirror (shown below), this tells you that you are too close to the trailer, and if you go any further, you will damage the wing extenders and their brackets.

When the red line disappears from your view, there are approximately 6 to 8 inches of space between the tractor and the trailer. That space provides a little cushion to ensure equipment isn’t damaged and to encourage you to get out and look (G.O.A.L.) or pull forward and re-set your back.

Preventing damage is not only a cost-saving measure, but also keeps our drivers out of the shop and road. Stay safe out there!
